MOLYBDENUM ALLOY EXTRUSION DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Abstract

Full length T shape extrusions of TZM were made within target requirements from 3200-3400F billet heating temperature with a reduction ratio of about 19:1. High liner pressure in excess of 200 ksi at an initial stem speed of 100 in/min was required to accomplish these extrusions. Surface quality was better than 150 RMS on full length extrustions. Few areas of glass or die coating tub-in appeared but could be removed by light conditioning. By careful application of the die coating, followed by grinding and polishing the coated surface to a finish of 100 RMS or better, striations were almost completely eliminated. Good die performance resulting in less than 0.005 in run-out on full length extrusions was achieved with zirconia coate dies. The zirconia was applied by the oxyacetylene flamespray process with solid rod feed. (Author)
