THE CHARACTER AND IDENTIFICATION OF EXPANSION SOILS

Abstract

A device and method to permit the expeditious identification of foundation (for light structures) soils which would be potentially troublesome due to excessive shrinkage or swelling is described. Secondary objectives were to make a literature survey of the problem of building on expansive soils and to summarize the fundamentals of soil volume change behavior: Shrinkage and swelling behavior of inorganic soils, and Laboratory test program and swell index device.
