MATERIAL-COATINGS AND FINISHES-HEAT TREAT PROTECTIVE-TITANIUM ALLOYS

Abstract

Ten materials were examined as protective coatings for Ti alloys during heat treatment. Butyl titanate performed the best of the 10 materials. A 10 mil sprayed coating of butyl titanate prevented surface contamination on Ti-6A1-4V from exceeding 0.5 mil. Sheet material with 0.5 mil contamination was successfully bent over a die having a radius 4 times the metal thickness. Knoop hardness uniformly averaged 333 ! 12 overA 9.8 MIL DISTANCE IN FROM THE EDGE OF THE TEST PIECE. (Author)
