LIQUID METAL EMBRITTLEMENT OF A CU-2( BE ALLOY

Abstract

The propensity toward brittle fracture of a Cu2% Be alloy in the presence of a 2% Na amalgam was investigated. Tensile properties of the alloy in the dry and wetted conditions were determined as a function of the following thermalmechanical histories: solution treated and aged at 700 F; solution treated plus maximum cold rolled and aged at 700 F; solution treated, agedAT 700 F for 1 hr, and cold worked; solution treated, aged at 700 F for 9 hr, and cold worked; solution treated and aged at 400 F; solution treated and cold worked. The results obtained from the conditions listed above showed that wetted fracture behavior was more affected by the manner in which the alloy was treated to obtain a particular strength than by the actual magnitude of the strength. The results are consistent with the recent findings in work with Al alloys, whereby fracture strength in a liquid metal environment was correlated with thermalmechanical history. (Author)
