PILOT EVALUATION OF VANADIUM ALLOYS

Abstract

Composiions ased upon V-1wt-% Ti-60 wt-% Cb and V-1 wt-% Hf-60 wt-% Cb complexed wth 0.05 to 0.1 wt-% O and/or N were evaluated for fabricability. the materials containing less than 0.06 wt-% deliberate interstitial additions could be rendered to sheet by warm (!))) F) working; compositions with greater amounts could not be fabricated even by hot working in the temperature range 1800 to 2400 F. Tensile evaluations conducted on V-5 wt-% Ti-20 wt-% Cb and V-5 wt-% Ti-20 wt-% Cb-0.05 wt-% O at 2000 F in He showed that the addition of 0.05 wt-% O resulted in approximately a 40% increase in strength. A large number of V-base alloys were also evaluated for tenile strength at 2400 F. The highest 2400 F ultimate tensle strength measured was 12,700 psi for the alloy V-1 wt-% Ti-60 wt-% b, a value comparable to that measured for several commercial and experimental Cb-base alloys.
