DEMOLITION OF CONCRETE LOCKS ON THE OHIO RIVER (DELIBERATE PHASE)

Abstract

A test program in whch concrete lock structres on the Ohio River were demolished by blsting with Composition C-4 explosive and milisecond delay eleric caps is reported. Internal charges of Composition C-4 explosive detonated in multiple rows of boreholes were evaluated for breaching both reinforced and unreinforced concrete was 1 to 14 ft thick. millisecond delay blasting techniques were used to establish the effectiveness of millisecond delay electric caps for reduction of air bast and ground shock, improvement of fragmentation, and control of throw of fragments. A recently developed demolition technique for cutting steel rods was tested by sing specially designed explosive charges to cut steel valve shafts under water. Some conlusions are: millisecond delay blasting results in reduction of air blst and ground shock, increased fragmentation with reduced explosive quantty, and controlled throw of fragments; Millisecond delay blasting techniques can be applied to miliary demolition asks requiring conrolled blasts; BLASING WTH MILLISECOND DEAY ELECTRIC CAPS CAN BE USED IN EXPLOSIVES AND DEMOLITION TRAINING AT INSTALLATIONS IN HEAVILY POPULATED AREAS TO REDUCE CONUSSION AND NOISE WHICH GENERATE COMPAINTS AND CLIMS.
