A THEORETICAL ANALYSIS OF THE AXIAL SPIN DECAY OF A SPIN-STABILIZEDLIQUID-FILLED SHELL

Abstract

The NAVIER Stokes equations are used to arrive at the laminar viscous torque exerted by a liquid on the walls of a liquid-filled spinning shell in flight. The equation of motion for the axial spin of the liquid-filled shell is then derived and solved. The result does not agree with the experimental observations of spin decay, and the possible causes for disagreement are discussed. (Author)
