LIGHT TRANSMITTANCE ON MATERIAL-FINISHES AND COATINGS-ANTI-ICING CONDUCTIVE-SIERRACOTE NO. 3, SIERRACIN CORPORATION

Abstract

Sierracote No. 3 is a proprietary metallic coating that can be deposited upon several transparent materials by the Sierracin Corporation using general high vacuum techniques. Sierracote No. 3, an infra-red reflective material, is used to make transparencies conductive so that they can be heated for snow and ice removal. The transparency on which Sierracote No. 3 was applied on the inner surface was a laminate comprised of .125 inch thick stretched Plex 55 acrylic resin sheet (coated ply), 0.75 inch thick 38PPH DBS PVB polyvinyl butryal sheet (interlayer), and .350 inch thick stretched Plex 55 sheet (structural ply). F-106 airplane production transparencies had a resistivity of about 15 ohms per square inch, and these were compared with transparencies having 21.0 ohms and 87.0 ohms per square inch resulting from varying thicknesses of Sierracote No. 3 applications. Spectrophotometer measurement of transmittance in the 400 to 750 millicron wavelength range indicated only minor differences between the coatings in the visible light range (400 to 700 millimicrons) and a barely appreciable variation in the infra-red region of 700 to 750 millimicrons.
