SAFE OPERATING TEMPERATURE LIMITS AND SHELF LIFE OF ROCKET MOTORS, 16-NS-1000, M15

Abstract

A test projet was established to determine new temperature limits for 16-NS-1000, M15 Rocket Motors of ages up to 7 years which are to be used for raining purposes. A total of 198 motors were inspected visaly and radiographically, temperature conditioned to various temperatures and statically fired. Two motors out of 39 malfunctioned at -40 F. Consequently, the temperature level was then aised to -30 F. Seventy-one motors then fired atisfactorily. High temperature tests were conduted at 140 F and 88 motors perfomed satisfactorily. As a result of these tests, the temperature lmits of the M15 Rocket Motor were changed to -20 F and 130 F. These new limits re applicable to motors for training purposes; they apply to motors not more than 7 years od. (Author)
