RECOMMENDED PRESCRIBED VIBRATION AND NOISE LIMITS FOR AUXILIARY MACHINERY ABOARD SUBMARINES USING THE GR 1551-A SOUND LEVEL METER AND PROBE

Abstract

Efforts continued to establish recommended vibration and noise levels for auxiliary machinery as measured with the general radio sound level meter, control box and a vibration pickup using the probe and magnet attached. The enclosed revised 'Chapman Numbers' for auxiliary machinery aboard 571/578 class nuclear and all conventional class submarines were plotted from all presently existing recorded noise level readings made available to this command. These numbers were obtained from the levels produced by shipboard GR-1551-A/B sound level meter probe measurement surveys conducted on rotating auxiliary machinery operating in good and bad condition. From the accumulated percentages plotted by established procedures, a fifty percent factor, for use as a standard, was selected. It is assumed that if fifty percent can be good, then it should not impose too much of a hardship on repair activities to continue to achieve these levels. (Author)
