THE INSTRUMENTATION OF AN ARRAY OF REFLECTORS FOR PASSIVE SATELLITECOMMUNICATIONS

Abstract

An experiment to prove the feasibility of arrays in satellite communications is now under way at Ohio State University. Four 30-foot reflectors have been instrumented for the University to make adaptively coherent the signals received by each dish from an Echo satellite. The satellite is illuminated by a remote transmitted signal. The effective gain of a 60-foot dish is obtained by the effects of slow irregularities in propagation and phase shifts, which are automatically compensated for in the signal-processing equipment. Acquisition, angle tracking, and several modes of cohering the parametric RF amplified signals are incorporated in this setup. (Author)
