INVESTIGATION OF AUTOMATION OF SPEECH PROCESSING FOR VOICE COMMUNICATION

Abstract

The AFCRL Speech Analyzer consists of an 18channel vocoder and a multiplex which quantizes the amplitudes of each of the 18 bands of frequencies into 3 bits. This results in a 54 bit description of the instantaneous speech spectrum. In addition, the voice amplitude is quantized into 3 bits and the pitch frequency into 6 bits.An additional bit is reserved for indicating whether the sound is voiced or unvoiced. A 64 bit computer word thus describes the speech sound at an instant of time and 50 such samples are taken each second. Amplitude normalization is achieved by quantizing ratios wth respect to the sum of the individal channel amplitdes, or area under the pattern. (Author)
