IMPROVED PHASE MODULATOR-DEMODULATOR

Abstract

The phase modulator-demodulator design is based on the original work done by Dr. Emil Hopner of IBM. This basic work was used to design a FIELDATA compatible improved phase modulatordemodulator. The problem of obtaining character synchronization in a reliable and automatic manner is discussed, and its solution is described. The analog and digital circuit design is described for the transmitter and the receiver and simple mathematical relationships are given. Results of laboratory testing using random data, white noise, and band-limiting are discusse , and the results plotted. A section of schematics, layouts, and dagrams for the modem is included. The modem which is undergoing evaluation has given satisfactory operation in its initial tests. Three areas are recommended for additional work: synchronous operation, higher data rate, and improved data reset circuits. (Author)
