ENGINEERING RESEARCH - MATERIAL - NEW HIGH TEMPERATURE SILICONE POLYMERS - DEVELOPMENT OF

Abstract

The materials research and development conducted under this program was aimed at obtaining thermally stable compounds for use on advanced aerospace vehicles. Because of their promise as high temperature materials, substituted silicon and silicone polymers were chosen for study. Since all the silicon compounds to be prepared could be derived from the unsaturated silicone, Bis(p-styryl)dimethylsilane, the major portion of the work was directed toward preparation of this silicone. A search of the literature revealed that the intended 4-step approach was unpredictable and would lead to very low yields. This was also borne out by preliminary efforts. An alternative approach was undertaken late in the program to prepare the Bis-(p-styryl)dimethylsilane. This was a 3-step process: (1) preparation of Bis-(p-bromophenyl)dimethylsilane; (2) further reaction of (1) to Bis-(p-1-hydroxyethylphenyl)dimethylsilane; (3) dehydration of (2) to Bis-(p-styryl)dimethylsilane. Slow delivery of necessary chemicals and pioneering nature of the research delayed the program allowing only steps (1) and (2) of the alternative process to be conducted as of this writing. (Author)
