OBJECTIVE AND DYNAMICAL STUDIES OF TROPICAL WEATHER PHENOMENA

Abstract

Subjective analyses of an upper-air cyclone over the Caribbean were carried out as a means of becoming familiar with data and analysis problems in this region. An extensive file of IBM card data for the Caribbean was obtained on loan from the University of Texas. Computer programs for determining layer-averaged values of meteorological quantities and for computing wind shear and lapse rate were applied to the case under study. Computer programs for calculating kinematical values of vorticity, divergence, vertical motion, etc. from Caribbean rawinsonde data and for mapping layer-averaged quantities were nearly completed. Hand computations were made of a streamfunction, which is intended to be an aid in tropical analysis and to be useful later in dynamical studies and in numerical forecasting. (Author)
