POLARIMETRIC OBSERVATIONS OF PLANETS AND SATELLITES

Abstract

The design and construction of suitable equipment for polarimetric measurements of planets and satellites by photoelectric technique is described. Measurements in the infra-red will enable us not only to collect more data about the physical structure of the surface, but probab y also to produce infor ation abo t the na ure and composition of the superficial layers of these bodies. The first part of the work,A HIEVED DURING THE PAST 12 MONTHS, WAS ONLY INSTRUMENTAL AND CAN BE DIVIDED INTO THE DESIGN AND TESTING OF THE INFRA-RED PHOTOELECTRIC POLARIMETER; THE STUDY OF APPROPRIATE FILTERS FOR SELECTION OF THE INFRA-RED SPECTRAL RANGES, THE MODIFICATION AND IMPROVEMENT OF THE 40 IN. REFLECTOR OF Meudon Observatory for adaptation to the photoelectric technique, and the design of techniques for removing by compensation the instrumental polarization. (Author)
