CRUSTAL STRUCTURE ACROSS THE WEST FLORIDA ESCARPMENT FROM GRAVITY DATA

Abstract

Surface-ship gravity data were obtained along a profile across the West Fl rida escarpment in December, 1961. Combining the ew gravity data with previously existing geological and geophysical information, two crustal structural models were constructed across the escarpment which fit the observed free-air gravity anomalies. One model was based on the assumption that the escarpment is caused by a reef build-up, and the other by crustal faulting. The gravity data are thus consistent with either a tectonic or non-tectonic origin of the escarpment. (Author)
