DEVELOPMENT OF FLEXIBLE INSULATION FOR SOLID PROPELLANT ROCKET MOTOR CASES

Abstract

The development of flexible, solid propellant rocket motor case insulation is discussed. Data are presented for insulation based primarily on butadiene/styrene and butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymers. Vulcanizates were compounded using a variety of fillers and filler combinations including salts, resins and fibers. A material was developed which static motor tests show to have promise as a flexible material for case insulation. This material was based on a butadiene/acrylonitrile-phenol furfural-asbestos composition. Other promising materials which are reported are based on two types of liquid butadiene/styrene copolymers and a butadiene/acrylonitrile-polyvinyl chloride blend. (Author)
