EFFECTS OF COUPLE-STRESSES IN LINEAR ELASTICITY

Abstract

IN A THEORY OF DEFORMATION OF CONTINUA ORIGINATED BY Voigt, the couple per unit area, acting across a surface within a material volume or on its boundary, was taken into account in addition to the usual force per unit area. Some typical effects of such couple-stresses are exhibited by means of solutions of problems of wave-propagation, vibration, stress-concentration and nuclei of strain--all within the framework of a linearized form of the couple-stress theory for perfectly elastic, centrosymmetric-isotropic materials.
