A SURVEY OF DIAGNOSTIC METHODS FOR IONIZED GASES USING MAGNETIC FIELDS

Abstract

A number of instruments designed to probe the plasma sheet during re-entry or any other plasma flow are described. The instruments produce magnetic fields and respond to the currents induced in the plasma as it cuts through the magnetic field. The set of instruments can measure: an averaged value of the product of conductivity times velocity, a profile of the same product, the local flow direction, an averaged flow velocity, and certain turbulent fluctuations. Another instrument, now being developed, will measure an average value of the electron-neutral collision frequency. Flight instruments and laboratory instruments are briefly described. Calibration procedures are outlined. (Author)
