INTERCEPT SYSTEM DYNAMIC RANGE ENHANCEMENT

Abstract

The dynamic range of parametric devices is investigated. A computer study has been in process which will allow exhaustive analysis of the dynamic range of single- and double-pumped parametric amplifiers. An S-band parametric amplifier was designed and built to allow experimental verification of the theoretical results being derived. A signal frequency of 3Gc and a pump frequency of 10Gc were employed. The parametric upper-sideband up-converter is studied, a large signal analysis is employed, and equations showing the large signal behavior, saturation level, and dynamic range are derived. The equations derived indicate the parameter choices which should be made to optimize the dynamic range. The dynamic range (non-optimum) of a typical parametric up-converter is calculated, using exact and approximate methods, and the results are satisfactory. (Author)
