STATE OF CHARGE INDICATORS FOR ALKALINE BATTERIES

Abstract

A system was developed to measure the residual capacity of Nickel-Cadmium batteries by measuring the phase shift produced by the cell. The system was calibrated for three sizes of batteries. An average deviation of !9% is reported for manually cycled batteries. Results of the first stages of tests on batteries with various histories are given. Data is presented indicatingA HIGH CORRELATION BETWEEN RESIDUAL CAPACITY AND RESISTANCE MEASURED DURING A SHORT HIGH CURRENT PULSE. A device was designed to measure resistance during the first few msec. of a pulse of several hundred amperes. This device will provide a means of measuring current when a load of about 1/2 milliohm is connected across a cell for a short time. (Author)
