HYDROGEN GENERATION FOR HIGH ALTITUDE BALLOONS

Abstract

Small scale laboratory investigations of NaBH4, NaAlH4 and aluminum were completed, and large scale hydrogen generation tests were initiated. Formulation and preparation of NaBH4 and NaAlH4 pellets from small scale reactions were completed. Large scale tests with NaBH4 and NaAlH4 were conducted to determine parameters required for the design of a suitable generator. Five designs were used to evaluate the problems connected with the use of NaBH4. Problems found with the large scale tests but not in small scale tests were foaming and moisture entrainment. In a single full scale test with NaBH4 using a preliminary Model V generator, the balloon was filled to over 42 in. diameter in 11 minutes. (Author)
