INITIAL CALIBRATIONS AND PERFORMANCE OF THE ARL TWENTY-INCH HYPERSONIC WIND TUNNEL

Abstract

The results obtained and the observations made from the initial operation of the Aeronautical Research Laboratories Hypersonic Wind Tunnel are treated. Mach number calibrations of two nozzle throats (nominal Mach 12 and Mach 14), performance tests of the diffuser and heat exchanger, and operational checks of the high pressure air station and of the vacuum system have been made and the results presented. Included are measurements of the boundary layer growth, effects of air liquefaction, and characteristics of overexpansion in the axisymmetric contoured nozzle used for the test series. (Author)
