DATA ACCURACIES AND WEIGHTING FACTORS AT 50 MILLIBARS

Abstract

The accuracy of various types of 50 mb data is evaluated in of standard errors. The estimation of standard errors is made, for the most part, without specifying true values. The relative importance of the various types of data is then expressed in numerical form. Extrapolated data is shown to be of great relative value in synoptic analysis at 50 mb. Extrapolation by use of persistence seems to be the best means of supplying additional data in most cases. A question is raised as to validity of previous height error estimates in the stratosphere.
