ADVANCED RADAR BEACON TECHNIQUES STUDY AND DEVELOPMENT

Abstract

Theoretical analysis and preliminary configuration design is discussed for several microwave receiver soli state devices, for low noise and high sensitivity C-band radar beacon front-end applications. These include an analysis of parametric amplifier pump power requirements for wo modes of operation, characteristics of suitable varactor diodes, and preliminary configuration d sign of a compact parametric amplifier. Analysis of a tunnel diode mixer is i cluded. Three suitable designs evolved, of which two utilize self-oscillation at one-half normal oscillator frequency and the third designed for use with an externally applied local oscillator. Analysis of tunnel diode oscillators and several vailable tunnel diodes are discussed leading to preliminary design of a tunnel diode local oscillator. Analysis of the requirements and design of a pulse time modulator and time discriminator is included. This guided the design of a servo time delay compensator for the purpose of reducing variations in delay between received and transmitte pulses in a radar beacon. (Author)
