SHEAR STRENGTHS ON MATERIALS-ALUMINUM ALLOY-X2020-T6
Abstract
Simple shear tests made with 1/8-inch diameter X2020 wire indicated the following shear strengths occurrences in various wire conditions: as received, 25,070 psi; annealed (775 F, 1 hour, slow cool to 500 F), 20,060 psi; solution heat treated (906 F, water quench), 33,350 psi; and solution heat treated and aged (320 F, 12 hours), 54,000 psi. Simple shear tests with solution heat treated and aged rivets revealed 53,500 psi shear strength with rivets aged at 320 F for 24 hours, and 50,400 psi shear strength with rivets aged at 320 F for 12 hours. Lap shear joints made with 0.063- x 1-inch-wide bare 7075-T6 sheet strips, 2 tandem rivets spaced at 1/2 and with 1/4 in. edge distance, rivets aged at 320 F for 18 hours and driven with 1.05 - 1.15 diameter protrusion and 1.30 to 1.40 diameter flat heads, developed 45,417 psi and 47,667 psi ultimate shear strengths with universal and countersunk head rivets, respectively. The X2020T6 rivets were harder to drive than 7075-T6 rivets and showed a pronounced tendency to develop fine head cracks. (Author)
