A LOW-NOISE, MULTIPLE-FUNCTION, X-BAND TRAVELING WAVE TUBE

Abstract

Work is described to design and develop a lownoise, multiple-function, X-band traveling-wave tube. Work consisted largely of design studies and exploratory experiments aimed at arrivingAT THE SIMPLEST, MOST RELIABLE DESIGN FOR A TUBE CAPABLE OF MEETING THE OBJECTIVE SPECIFICATIONS OF THE PROGRAM. The main emphasis was placed on the design and fabrication of the lownoise, linear-output section of the proposed tube and the novel limited-video-output section of the tube. Concurrently, periodic-permanentmagnet-focusing techniques were evaluated and the problem of converting the potential tube designs to metal-ceramic structures was studied. Special effort was expended in the design of the waveguide couplers and the slow-wave helix structures to obtain the required tube bandwidth, reduce tube losses, and achieve flexibility in electrical and mechanical adjustments in tubes of metal-ceramic construction.
