RESEARCH RELATING TO FUEL CELLS

Abstract

INVESTIGATION OF THE OXYGEN ELECTRODE IN ACID SOLUTIONS IS REPORTED IN ORDER TO ELUCIDATE THE RELEVANT MECHANISMS AND TO ESTABLISH THEIR RESPONSE TO CHANGES IN SOLUTION AND ELECTRODE PARAMETERS. The following tasks were undertaken: (1) Experimental results were obtained for the anodic evolution and cathodic reduction of O2 in normal sulfuric and perchloric acid solutions on bright gold electrodes. Results obtained appear to be highly significant. (2) The electrochemical reaction orders for the anodic oxidation and cathodic reduction of H2O2 on bright gold electrodes were determined and found to be first order in both cases. The significance of this observation with regard to the resting potential of noble metal electrodes in acid H2O2 solutions and also in connection with certain proposed reaction mechanisms is discussed.
