THE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF BABOON (PAPIO DOGUERA) KIDNEY CELLS TO HUMAN ENTEROVIRUSES

Abstract

Studies were made to learn if baboon kidney cells are as susceptible as monkey kidney cells to human enteroviruses. Since the baboon (Papio doguera) is a 'clean' animal--that is, relatively free from native viruses--it should be useful as a model in studying human infections. On culture, baboon kidney cells showed high susceptibility to most human enteroviruses. Their usefulness is inhanced in that they indicated the presence of contaminating SV40 virus. (Author)
