PHASE SHIFT AMPLIFIER

Abstract

Identifiers: Easitron, Millimeter waves.A study of slow-wave propagating structures particularly suited for application at millimeter-wave frequencies is presented. Circuits suitable for use with both solid and hollow electron beams are considered. The basic building block for the solid-beam circuits is an array of quarter-wavelength stubs or bar resonators. By appropriate disposition of these arrays and arrangement of the surrounding walls, circuits suitable for both backward-wave oscillators and traveling-wave amplifiers have been achieved. A related structure is considered for hollow beams. The properties of all of the solid-beam structures were verified in 5-mm experimental tubes. Circuits for both broad- and narrow-band amplifiers as well as for oscillators with narrow and wide tuning ranges are presented. C-w powers of several watts were achieved in some of the oscillators, and more than 10 watts were achieved in an amplifier. Exceptional efficiences were achieved through use of depressed collectors. Low total circuit losses of about 4 db in 5-mm slow-wave structures were obtained through maintenance of extremely close tolerances in fabrication. All of the tubes were designed for use with voltages of 10 kv or less. (Author)
