ELECTRODELESS MHD GENERATOR RESEARCH. PART 1. THEORETICAL ANALYSIS

Abstract

T HE THEORETICAL INVESTIGATION ENCOMPA SED BOTH T E ELECTRODYNAMIC AND GA DYNA IC A PECTS OF THE A.C. MHD generator and their relationship to each other. The following areas of investigation are included: generator impedance, side lo es, fringing effects, channel flow heat transfer, plasma viscosity, operating conditions, and starting transients. parametric studies are included for several of the above-mentioned topics. The result of t e above studies has le to the design of an experimental generator. T HE ADDITION OF A FERRO AGNETIC MATERIAL EXTERNAL TO THE GENERATOR IMPROVES THE PO ER FACTOR CHARACTERISTICS. Power factors up to 0.4 are possible at low frequencies. Supersonic rather than subsonic operation of the generator yields the higher power densities. Fringing effects indicate the need for shading magnetic field analogous to DC generators. Heat protection of the A.C. MHD generator walls by transpiration c oling is feasible. (Author 0
