DEVELOPMENT OF DIES FOR EXTRUSION OF COMPLEX SHAPES OF STEEL AND REFRACTORY ALLOYS

Abstract

Significant improvement in the properties of ceramic-coated metallic, metal-fiber-reinforced ceramic, and refractory intermetallic die , for use in the extr sion of refractory etals and steels, is sought. a state-of-the-art survey was conducted by reference to reports and by visits to experimental and producti n extrusion facilities experienced in extruding specialty steels and refractory metals. A URVEY OF AVAILABLE MATERIALS REVEALED A NUMBER WHICH ARE POTENTIALLY FABRICABLE INTO I PROVE DIES. Preliminary choices of material were g ided by the agreement of known or predicted properties at various temperatures with characteristics desired in the dies. An indentor device for testing coated substrates was designed an its construction started. Hot pressing furnaces for consolidating the various materials were designed, built and tested. (Aut or)
