THE ROTATIONALLY SYMMETRIC MOTION OF A CYLINDRICAL SHELL WITH VARIOUS END CONDITIONS DUE TO VARIOUS CONSTANT VELOCITY LOADS

Abstract

The general problem of thin cylinders is analyzed with various end conditions for the roationally symmetric motions caused by the passage of a pressure front of constant velocity along the axis of the cylinder. The method of Virtual Work is applied to a generatrix of the cylinder, which is then treated as a beam on an eastic foundation with various end conditions. The results are presented in terms of three radial deflection components: (a) bending deflections, (b) rigid body transltions, and (c) rigid body rotations. The resulting equations for the many cases considered and for particular end conditions are presented in tabular form. (Author)
