TRAVELING-WAVE TUBE MIXER PROGRAM

Abstract

The conclusions of a detaled analysis of mixing millimeter waves in beam-type devices led to the design and construction of a two-helix travelingwave-tube mixer. The design parameters were chosen after an analysis of helix gain, physical size and beam power. The effects of dielecric loading of the helix support structure were deteined, and heix pitch altered to compensate for this loading. The presence of a fast waveguide mode in the support structure was dicovered and this undesired mode was eliminated. A pole-piece design for the single-solenoid magnet, to be used with the mixer, was determined. The construction processing of detail mixer parts is being carried out smoothly, and subssembly constrution is under way. (Author)
