ALBEDO OF ARCTIC SURFACES
Abstract
Tabulations of area occupied by 5% albedo classes per 5 degrees latitude belt expressed as a percentage of the total area of each belt are presented. These tabulations are based upon the monthly maps which made up the atlas. In the earlier publication the spatial distribution was shown visually, which necessitated the use of wide albedo groups (20% intervals). Such a wide grouping does not permit calculations to be made of net solar radiation in the Arctic areas. Therefore, in order to supply more detailed information for this task, the maps were reexamined. In the course of the re-examination specific albedo values, based upon data given in the literature examined, were assigned to the classes used in the maps. Transitional zones, where applicable, were inserted by assuming a gradient of albedo between classes. Albedos are tabulated for both direct and diffuse radiation conditions where they differ significantly. The direct radiation albedo information is presented graphically for each month in the form of stereograms. Tables of solar declination and duration of daylight for areas north of 60 degrees N are also given. (Author)
