THERMAL WAVES AND THERMAL STRESSES

Abstract

The results of a preliminary study intended to analyze the effects of the sudden application of a heat source on one side of a plane or cylindrical wall are presented. The disturbance in temperature, stress and strain on the wall caused by such a thermal shock has in many respects a great similarity with the disturbance caused by a mechanical shock. This similarity suggests considering the gradual propagation of the thermal disturbance as the propagation of a thermal wave. Consequently, it is the objective of this report to investigate the correlation between the boundary conditions of the wall and the mechanism of the successive formation of incident, reflected and refracted thermal waves.
