TOWARDS A GENERAL PROGRAM FOR THE NUMERICAL SOLUTION OF BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS OF ORDINARY DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

Abstract

LINOP I with its associated subprograms has been developed in an effort to provide an iterative procedure for solving a class of probl ms which ad it the follo ing description. Given a line r opera or L , BOU ARY CON ITIO S B ic in principle may be non-linear, and a sui ably w ll behaved function f( , ) it is desired to find a parameter lambda and a function u defined on a given domain E such that the boundary conditions B are satisfied and Lu = lambda f(u,lambd ). It is assumed th t f L, and B are such that a unique olutio exists i some neighborhood containing E. In order that the program will have a wide range of application, an attempt has been made to isolate the properties that depend on the method used for the solution from hose that are peculiar o the specific problem considered. For ex pl if h differenc b ween two problems is the statement of the boundary conditions, then it might be that the only modifications necessary are in the subroutines dealing with the boundary conditions.
