STUDY AND INVESTIGATION OF ACQUISITION AND TRACKING OF OPTICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

Abstract

Acquisition and tracking as applie to representativ optical communication system are studied. The two hypo etical communication links considered were between n earth-orbiting satellite and a moon-orbiting satellit and between a earth-orbiting satellite and a cislunar space vehicle. The results show that acquisition and tracking are feasible. The study includes a typical system design based o the use of a laser communication tra smitter. This subsystem utilizes a five-motor gimbal configuration w ich mounts the optical systems and sensors that perform the far-body tracking function a d the acquisition and tracking of the communication beam. An image tube is used as th acquisition sensor in order to obtain high scanning rates. The tracki g sensor design is based on state-of-the-art star tracker and utilizes a multiplier phototube.
