INTERACTION OF SEPARATION AT THE TRAILING EDGE AND AT THE LEADING EDGE IN THREE-DIMENSIONAL FLOW

Abstract

Wings with sharp leading edge or very small radius of curvature exhibit, even at low incidence, separation phenomena at the leading edge which are known as 'excrescences' and which have been classified as essentially three-dimensional. As in the case of separation at the trailing edge investigated for obstacles which are in fact three-dimensional, it would appear therefore necessary to deal first of all with the problem of three-dimensional excrescences, starting with particularly simple obstacles and then pass to the two-dimensional limit. Such obstacles are the annular wings produced by the rotation of an aerodynamic profile around an axis parallel to its chord. The development of excrescences on these wings, and in particular on the outer side of their upper surface, has been studied in relation to incidence, and checked by wind tunnel tests. Other tests carried out on a twodimensional wing between panels made it possible to establish a comparison confirming that passing to the two-dimensional limit leads to conclusions which are qualitatively correct.
