HEAT CAPACITY OF LIQUID ALLOYS

Abstract

The purpose of this project has been to determine accurately the heat capacities of representative liquid metals and alloys. Such data will contribute to the present meager knowledge of the behavior of the liquid metallic state and should aid in interpretations of liquid metal structures. Very few detailed and accurate heat capacity measurements have previously been reported for either pure liquid metals or liquid alloys. Most of the available data for liquid metallic elements have been obtained from heat content measurements, where the experimental scatter is such that trends of heat capacity with temperature are not apparent and a heat capacity which is constant with temperature is usually inferred. The heat capacities of only a few liquid metals, mercury, lithium, sodium, Potassium and lead, have previously been accurately determined either by direct measurement or from heat content data of unusually high precision. In each of these cases heat capacity decreases markedly with temperature for a considerable range of temperature above the melting point.
