RADAR OBSERVATIONS OF FIELD-ALIGNED IRREGULARITIES DURING THE TWO MAGNETICALLY DISTURBED DAYS, MAY 6TH, 1960 AND MAY 8TH, 1960

Abstract

Further evidence is presented for an association, postulated by Dearden (1962), between the Outer Van Allen Belt, the FAI arcs obser ed from Brisbane, and the 6300 A airglow arcs. The phenomena associated with a discontinuous increase in the northward speed of an FAI arc are studied and the event is interpreted as arising from some form of impact on the magnetosphere. The occurrence of an annular echo and its associated phenomena is interpreted as an observation of the Outer Belt dumping radiation into the atmosphere. (Author)
