AN L-BAND TUNNEL DIODE OSCILLATOR

Abstract

The inductance of tunnel diodes in a low inductance package and the inductance of dummy structures consisting of strips of copper foil were measured at microwave frequencies in a triplate slotted line having a center conductor 280 mils wide. The indications are that a large portion of the remaining inductance of the present diode package is due to converging currents. A number of diodes having peak currents of 300 to 500 ma were fabricated. Preliminary circuit tests, however, resulted in a maximum power output of 10 mw at 1200 mc which is no greater than that obtained from 200 ma diodes. A circuit combining radial and coaxial line structures was designed. A solid state modulator was developed capable of switching a 25 mw oscillator on and off at audio frequencies. (Author)
