A VERSATILE FIELD ION MICROSCOPE

Abstract

An all-metal design of the field ion microscope was proven to be both feasible and versatile. Adaptability, variable magnification, ruggedness, greater safety when used with liquid hydrogen cooling, and high voltage shielding characterize this model. A six-inch-diameter vertical screen, which is easily replaceable, facilitates its use.Application of this model to the study of different screen materials, the use of solid nitrogen cooling, and the study of grain boundaries is described.
