MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF INTERMETALLIC COMPOUNDS

Abstract

Suitable melting, casting and fabrication techniques were developed for the preparation of the intermetallic compounds VNi3 and VCo3 inA FORM SUITABLE FOR THE STUDY OF MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR. The annealing behavior of arc- melted, rolled and extruded materials were examined by metallographic and hardness techniques. The mechanical behavior of cast and extruded material of various grain size and degrees of order were determined by indentation stress- strain, compression and tensile testing and fractography. Arc-melted ingots of VNi2, V2Ni, V3Ni, VCo and V3Co were prepared and the feasibility of their homogenization and fabrication examined. An extensive review of the relevant literature was completed. Finally, the validity of a method of computing Young's modulus for intermetallic compounds was investigated.
