ANALYSIS OF RELIABILITY MANAGEMENT IN DEFENSE INDUSTRIES

Abstract

Guidelines have been developed in analyzing the reliability function in industry and valid conclusions have been derived. These can be summarized as: (1) reliability, as a distinct functional organization, has been embraced by the greater part of the defense industry, (2) the reliability organization is gradually moving up in company structural organizations, (3) to be most effective, a company's reliability group should report to top management in both a line and staff capacity, (4) the reliability function is an over-all control function embodying the total concept and cutting across departmental lines, and (5) inadequate funds, plus compressed time schedules are currently the biggest deterrent to increased reliability. Coupled with this is the lack of management understanding, emphasis, and recognition of the reliability scope. Management's reliability policies, objectives and responsibilities have been delineated, the relationship of reliability to quality control has been described and reliability tasks have been detailed.
