RESEARCH ON FLUORINE PROPELLANTS

Abstract

A research program in the chemistry of fluorine bonded to oxygen and nitrogen is described. The preparation of a new compound, NF2OF, was achieved by two different methods. The fluorination of urea was shown to yield uns-difluorourea, and yields of difluoramine as high as 80 percent of theoretical are now being obtained reproducibly. The reactions of difluoramine with bases were studied and the complexes with alkali metal fluorides prepared and described. Some nonaqueous solvents for difluoramine were found and the study of reactions in solution was initiated. Unsuccessful experiments for the attempted synthesis of NF2CN, tetrafluorourea and other compounds are described. (Author)
