Heat Resistant Explosives IX

Abstract

Improved procedures for the preparation of 1,3-dimethoxy-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene, DMTNB, an intermediate in the preparation of 1,3-diamino2,4,6-trinitrobenzene are described. Foaming problems previously encountered in the preparation of this compound have been solved by using anhydrous conditions. The procedures described involve the use of anhydrous sulfuric-nitric acid and potssium nitrate-sulfuric acid mixtures as nitrating agents.
