Preparation and Properties of 2,2,8,8-Tetranitro-4,6-Dioxal-1, 9-Nonanediol, Dinol.

Abstract

A new, low melting, insensitive polynitro aliphatic diol, 2,2,8,8-tetranitro-4,6-dioxa1,9-nonanediol (DINOL) has been synthesized by the reaction of salts of bis(2,2-dinitro-ethyl) formal (DEFO) with formaldehyde in acid solution. The soluble disodium salt of DEFO, prepared by alkaline hydrogen peroxide reduction of the corresponding trinitro compound, TEFO, is converted, without isolation, to DINOL in 80% yield. The product separates from the reaction mixture as the colorless crystalline monohydrate which can be readily converted to anhydrous DINOL melting at 61.5 C - 62.5 C. (Author)
