SOME IMPLICATIONS OF ASYMMETRY IN BALLISTIC MISSILE RE-ENTRY HEADS

Abstract

Asymmetry in a missile is classified under two headings (a) aerodynamic and (b) inertial. Two issues are considered: (1) the problem of spin stabilization in free space for which (b) is relevant, and (2) the interplay with increasing aerodynamic forces during the descent for which (a) and (b) are both relevant. A full treatment of (2) is elusive mathematically and only a simplified version is attempted.
